The University of Utah Women's Soccer program has been a great supporter of Hartland and ran another great clinic for our teams. Thanks Utes! Check out the slideshow below: On October 25th, the HC4YF participants and their families went to the Natural History Museum of Utah (NHMU) for our end of season celebration. It was an amazing evening and the perfect end to a great season. Nearly 90 people attended the event and had the opportunity to explore the museum which was a first for many of the families. NHMU provided dinner for everyone, family souvenir photos, and distributed certificates to students who had participated in their bio-blitz citizen science activities this year. Awards were also given from HC4YF. Everyone had a wonderful time and we are very thankful to NHMU and its staff for being such a strong supporter and collaborator, and to Keri Taddie at the Mountain View Glendale CLC for all of her support with logistics planning and transportation. Hartland has again partnered with SheJumps to bring our Hartland Community kids up into the Wasatch Mountains for educational and empowering activities in our local wilderness. Last winter it was for a day of Alpine skiing, this year we have a lot of activities lined up and we started with Wild Skills. Wild Skills included a number of outdoor activities including basic first-aid, building a survival shelter, route-finding and orienteering with map and compass and a lot more. The goal of course is much more than developing outdoor skills and learning about how to safely enjoy the outdoors, and includes building confidence and empowering people to live up to their full potential, as well as just having a great time in nature. Please see a description from shejumps.org about wild skills below. SheJumps' Wild Skills youth events teach young girls the survival and technical skills they need for outdoor adventuring. These skills can be applied in any season or region and include first aid, navigation, leave no trace, 10 essentials, shelter building and more. Our events encourage girls to learn new skills, take on challenges and think creatively which develops perseverance and fosters confidence. Our goal is to see girls learning, having fun and connecting in an encouraging environment with amazing instruction and support from female mentors. We want Wild Skills to be an experience they will remember, one that will spark a lifetime of passion for the outdoors and will remind them that they are capable of anything. We have a lot lined up for the year. So far our season is going great on the soccer field and we have also begun our river stewardship trips on the Jordan River. More to come! Enjoy the slideshow below (vordenberg.com photos) This past winter Hartland took 16 young women up to ski with She Jumps at Alta. It was a fantastic outing and the start to a few great partnerships for Hartland. Thank you SheJumps, Thank you Jeff with Momentum Recycling and thank you Alta for your support! On October 27th, Hartland Community 4 Youth & Families had our Community Celebration at the beautiful Tracy Aviary. Families, friends, and our participants came out to explore the birds and other sites at the Aviary and to watch as we gave our awards and mementos to this season's participants.
A huge thank you to the Tracy Aviary for all of their support with this event and for donating use of the Aviary and the Chase Mill with us for our event and fundraising activities. Thanks especially to Alfonso Lopez, their Cultural Liason, and to Tim Brown (Executive Director), and Logan Stefanoek (Rental Coordinator) for their generosity. It has been a year of unprecedented growth for our organization and we've been thrilled with every bit of it. We look forward to the next season! Gilberto Rejón Magana was recently selected as a recipient of Molina Healthcare's Community Champion Awards. He and a few other community leaders were recognized at an event at the Cultural Celebration Center in West Valley City.
Here is what Molina Healthcare says about this award, "Molina Healthcare’s Community Champions Awards program was created in 2006 to honor the unsung heroes that work in our communities and inspire others through their selflessness, extraordinary service and contributions that positively affect the lives of those around them. The annual Community Champions event was established to honor the memory of Molina Healthcare’s physician founder, Dr. C. David Molina, who believed in community partners working together to create programs that would help care for individuals in our society who need a little extra help. The awards ceremony brings together individuals whose civic and faith-based leadership, volunteerism as well as public advocacy embody Dr. Molina’s spirit of service, family and community. Winners each receive a Community Champions trophy and a $1,000 grant to designate to a nonprofit of their choice as a way to “pay it forward” in the community. These microgrants frequently enable local agencies to provide resources to serve those in need. These events usually draw several hundred organizations together to celebrate the champions who are being recognized as well as to showcase the great work of the nominating agencies and grant recipients." Some of Gilberto's friends, family, and HC4YF board members came to celebrate this exciting occasion with him. Responsibility, Respect, Compassion, and Self-discipline.
